I tried to discuss today with my family the fact that the only unifying characteristic of people who supported Trump's campaign was that they valued authoritarianism, and how we won't be able to face down the issues of today unless we acknowledge that this difference accounts for a divide of what people actually want (in other words, the "we all want the same things, we just disagree about how to get there" argument is neither true nor productive). I tried to explain that it was crucial yo recognize authoritarian influences in every aspect of our lives, in order to familiarize ourselves with what it means in practical application. I tried to point out how the worlds hottest women list of 2016, having all euro-centrically attractive women (and all WHITE women), was both representative of— and perpetually damaging to— the collective psyche of the human population. All they wanted to use their mental and emotional budgets for was the super bowl game.
